THE 24-HOUR AMBULATORY EEG

ABOUT YOUR BRAIN

In your brain, cells generate electrical impulses which carry messages to all parts of the body through a complex system of nerves. The brain receives information when light, sound, etc., produce electrical impulses in nerves leading to the brain. The brain sends out electrical impulses which control actions such as muscle coordination, speech and vision. These electrical messages to and from the brain can become altered by illness or injury. This test can help detect the locations and cause of the problem.

ABOUT THE 24-HOUR AMBULATORY ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM (EEG)

The EEG provides important information about the health and function of the brain. Electrodes are applied with adhesive to key locations on your head. These electrodes have wires leading to a portable box. The box picks up electrical impulses in your brain and records the activity onto a computerized disc (2 hours).

You may do your normal activities including eating and sleeping before, during and after the test, except for showering. Do not shower with this equipment on. On the day of the test, please take your medications as you normally take them. This test is painless and there is no radiation involved. Wear comfortable clothing. A button down shirt is required (this prevents having to pull clothing up over the electrodes). You will be asked to keep a 24-hour diary of activities during the recording. A return trip the next day will be scheduled to remove the equipment and electrodes (15-20 minutes).
